Our Origin Story
Hannalore and Thomas Hubert, also known as Mama and Papa, started Hubert’s Department Store in 1972. The two moved their family to Newport, NH from New York while seeking a better quality of life. They knew this hard-working, small New England town was the perfect place to raise their family and start a business. The Hubert's committed themselves to providing the community with quality cloth
ing and footwear at a good value in a friendly atmosphere.
In 1985, Mr. and Mrs. Hubert retired and Guenter, their elder son, had dreams of continuing the family business. He met and married Kathy Begin and together they began running Hubert's Family Outfitters. Shortly after Kathy’s sister, Linda, joined the team, using her previous experience of law and accounting to help the company grow.
Due in part to their father’s failing health and recognizing the high-quality of life in the New Hampshire area, Guenter’s brother, Tom, returned to the region from Philadelphia and immersed himself back into the family business.
In 1990 the three saw an opportunity for expansion and opened a second location in Claremont, NH. Tom began managing the new Hubert's location, and together the Hubert’s continued to exapand their consumer base. By 2008 the Hubert's opened three additonal locations in New London (established in1991), Lebanon (established in1998) and Peterborough (established in 2008.) With four stores and a centralized warehouse still located in Newport, the Hubert’s are proud to be a New Hampshire-based, family-run business.
Upon Guenter and Kathy’s retirement in 2017, the family tradition continues with Tom running the company with his wife Stephanie and their four children, Hannah, TJ, Nick, and
Sophie. The next generation is already heavily involved in supporting the family business, and encompass the same family values instilled in them by their grandparent’s leadership.
In 2024, Hubert's is making another expansion to the company with the launch of their eCommerce website to continue supporting our community as the world and technology evolves. Whether in-store or online, we're here to support our customers.
